MEET THE TEAM: Tomi – A long-time Raya Divers professional, now teaching diving in Phuket

Tomi began his diving career with Raya about ten years ago and has since worked in several of Thailand’s stunning destinations. This season, you’ll find him mainly at the Phuket branch, where he shares his years of experience with new divers.

Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Tomi, a diving instructor with Raya Divers in Phuket. You’ll usually find me in the water, on the boat, or looking for someone’s lost sunglasses – generally in that order.

In which destinations have you worked before?
This is my fifth season in Phuket. I’ve also worked three seasons at Raya Yai and one in Krabi.

Where are you from, and what did you do before joining Raya Divers?
I’m from Lahti, Finland. I came to Raya almost exactly ten years ago as a Divemaster trainee – and never left. Back in Finland, I mostly worked in the financial sector, but luckily those insurance contracts have now been replaced by schools of fish.

What’s the best thing about your current location?
Our very own boat! It gives us freedom – and just the right amount of responsibility.

Favorite dive trip or excursion – and why?
In Phuket, definitely Bida Nok. It has it all: walls, big fish schools, and plenty of cool little critters.

Favorite Thai dish – and where’s the best place to eat it?
Khao Soi or Pad Krapao. A simple noodle dish at Khun Jeed Yodpak Restaurant always hits the spot.

Big fish or small creatures?
Both! Though the whale shark is still a bit like Santa Claus – everyone talks about it, but few actually see it.

Singha, Chang or fruit shake?
Craft beer! I recommend stopping by Beer Right Back brewery bar in Chalong.

Beach bar or nightclub?
Beach bar + craft beer = perfection.

Funniest or best moment of this season?
Every day is fun – thanks to our amazing team and great guests.
